If you have served in the U.S. Military and your company is 51% owned by former service members, you can join the chamber under "Veteran Owned Business Status". Getting through the process of meeting the Department of Veteran Affairs certification can be challenging and the chamber is here to walk you through the process to be officially certified as a VOB. Joining the chamber as a self identified Veteran Owned Business carries no weight in the application to federal grants or any official status outside of the MAVCC.
The full requirements for being designated as a VOB from the VA are:
Ownership: The business must be at least 51% owned by one or more veterans. This ownership must be direct and unconditional.
Control and Management: Veterans must control the day-to-day operations and long-term decision-making processes of the business. They must be responsible for the strategic direction and management. The veteran owner(s) should also hold the highest officer position within the company, ensuring they are actively involved in the business's operations.
Veteran Status: The veteran(s) must have a record of active duty in the U.S. military, naval, or air service, and have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Some certification programs may require proof of status through forms like the DD Form 214, which provides the individual's discharge information.
Business Type: The business must be considered small under the Small Business Administration (SBA) size standards, which vary by industry. It must also be for-profit and registered as a legal entity in the U.S.
Certification programs like the VA’s Vets First Verification Program or the SBA’s Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) program require documentation to verify these requirements before a business can access certain federal contracts or grants designated for veteran-owned businesses
